Meltdown, Spectre and IoT

It could be the title of a science-fiction movie!  Meltdown and Spectre are hardware vulnerabilities allowing programs to steal data from computers or mobile phones. Large companies are reacting, claiming that corrections have been deployed thus making our machines safe. What about IoT devices?

As we are questioning ourselves whether data in our computers or mobile phones are protected, should we also think about the data exchanged over IoT networks?  As of now, most of edge devices have little or no protection against attacks even not as sophisticated as Meltdown and Spectre. If IoT is really the next digital revolution, it is time to acknowledge that it is part of our life, in the same way as our computers and mobile phones. Then, we can expect that those who are providing technologies for the IoT are considering the best practices for protecting our data, which means protecting the secret keys behind the data.

The digital security technologies have been successfully used for years in computers and mobile phones, with Trusted Platform Modules and Secure Elements respectively. They can also work for any type of connected device, leaving attackers behind an impenetrable gate.

Let’s ensure we will first create trust in the IoT, then the revolution will have no limit!
