Hackers will not win !

The DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) occurrences are in everyone’s mind! Over the last few years, there has been an increase both in terms of number of attacks and scale of the attacks. Typically, a DDoS attacks consists in overwhelming a server by a number of requests it cannot handle. To complete a DDoS attack, hackers use relays: they take control of easy targets and use these targets to trigger the attack on the server itself.

The world of unsecure connected objects, such as home devices that connect to the internet is an easy path for hackers. It has been demonstrated that many attacks used home cameras that were ‘protected’ using a single default password hardcoded in the software of all cameras. This made these cameras and their owners the involuntary accomplices of the hackers.

Deloitte, in its most recent predictions says there has been 10 million DDoS attacks in 2016, and this figure is bound to increase dramatically over the next few years. The lack or weakness of security at the IoT devices level has been so far a root cause of the explosion of DDoS attacks.

As stakeholders in the IoT ecosystem we should not accept to see our developments used by pirates to hack systems. The solutions exist, they are right at hand! The secure transactions industry has been developing smart security solutions for decades allowing to secure telecoms, payments, identity and more. These technologies are ready to be used to protect IoT devices and ensure they cannot be used to relay DDoS attacks.
